Victron Battery Balancer, for 24/36/48V series-connected lithium-ion banks, BBA000100100
Victron Battery Balancer

The Victron Battery Balancer is a must-have for series-connected 12 Volt lithium-ion batteries. Unlike lead-acid batteries, lithium-ion batteries do not at all self-balance when they are charged; if an initial difference in state-of-charge exists it will continue to exist for all subsequent charge cycles. This can cause problems with the build-in Battery Management System of these batteries, switching off the lowest SOC battery when nearing empty, switching off the highest SOC battery while charging due to over-Voltage.
The Victron Battery Balancer equalizes the state of charge of two series connected 12V batteries, or of several parallel strings of series connected batteries. When the charge voltage of a 24V battery system increases to more than 27V, the Battery Balancer will turn on and compare the voltage over the two series connected batteries. The Battery Balancer will draw a current of up to 1A from the battery (or parallel connected batteries) with the highest voltage. The resulting charge current differential will ensure that all batteries will converge to the same state of charge. One Battery Balancer can equalize a 24V lithium-ion battery bank, three of them can balance a 48V bank.
If needed, several balancers can be paralleled to increase the balancing current.
The Battery Balancer works for lead-acid chemistries too, though generally lead-acid batteries self-balance during the absorb charging phase.
